RISK. It’s a small four letter word that can hold a heavy weight on someone. I was listening to a podcast on professional climber Alex Honnold and his thoughts and definition of risk. He made the first free solo ascent of El Capitan on June 3, 2017, completing the 2,900 ft Freerider route in 3 hours 56 minutes. One might think that what he does is risky, but in reality the movements in the climb he made were calculated down to specific movements along with many trial runs with a rope before attempting it. His was a calculated risk.
Risk is associated with so many things in life. You need to take risks in your personal life such as starting new relationships or trying a new activity. Your professional life is, also, filled with challenges and inherent risks if you want to move up the ladder or breakout on your own.
People look at my life and think that I might take big risks, but it is all in perception of your risk factor. I have been working and playing in outdoor for over 20 years, back when women didn’t really participate in outdoor recreational activities. As a child, my mother could not keep me indoors, and when she would try to ground me, keeping me inside worked for about ten minutes, before I was told to go outside again. I’m sure it was because I didn’t know how to be inside when it was nice out. Getting onto rock, mountain biking or hopping in kayak is second nature for me. My definition of risk is very different than most people’s, especially folks living in the city.
No matter what your definition of risk is, it is my wish that “you” come and play with me outside sometime soon. I’d like to change your definition. I am offering some super fun trips for 2018 and you can take a “risk” and sign up to join. I’d like to introduce you to a new activity you didn’t think you could do and show you how it will propel you forward in your personal and professional life.
I promise you will not regret, but I will warn you that you will come away transformed and empowered more than you could ever believe.
My 2018 wish is for you to challenge yourself, with or without me. Sign up now, let’s have some crazy wicked fun together!!!
Peace be with you this week. Diana
